I've been gardening with four of my six wizard for some time now. While it takes a bit of diligence (I generally check at least twice a day, once a quick morning check before going to work and once at night) the various plants do provide significant quantities of some hard to get crafting supplies and some treasure cards that are otherwise challenging to get.
I have found that once you get the larger area spells, layout of your garden patch is particularly important. If you put down your plants (I use pots because they are easier to adjust the position of) in tightly packed squares you'll be able to cast one medium or large sized area spell and hit the whole group.
It also helps quite a bit if you keep the blocks of plants (for small that is usually 3x3) pretty uniform. I've been doing lots of yellow, orange and pink dandelions for just this reason. They are cheap, readily available as drops and the pink ones give black pearls and other hard to find crafting supplies. Just keep periodically visiting them and taking care of their needs and you'll level up quickly and grab lots of useful supplies.
It is also worth noting that if you pop home, do your gardening and then quit and reenter that wizard you wind up back where you started. This makes taking care of your garden much less of a time sink.
One of these days soon I'm going to start documenting some of what the various plants give in terms of supplies. I've mostly dealt with the dandelions and some silver trumpet vines (these aren't common, but give really interesting treasure cards). I'm going to work on branching out into other more interesting crops soon though.
I found that normal crops are perfectly happy in enchanted soil, so I'm going to start switching all of my plantings over to only enchanted soil as soon as the currently planted crops mature out. I've also got to figure out where I want to put large plantings as there don't seem to be any large pots.
